Hotel Continental Plzeň

The hotel is said to have been one of the most famous and important buildings in Pilsen´s history. It was founded in 1895, originally called Menčík, later Pilsner Hof. At the end of the 1920s, it was (already under the name Continental) renovated by the new owner Václav Ledecký. During World War II, it was visited by members of the Gestapo due to its exclusivity. During the bombing of Škoda's factory by American planes at the end of 1944, about 70 people died in Pilsen, while a large part of them died in the Continental, where the bomb fell and exploded. After the liberation, the renovated hotel became the main residence of US military commanders. After the onset of communism, in 1952, the hotel was nationalized and returned to the hands of the original owner after the revolution. Its 48 rooms offer accommodation with an approximate price of 1000 - 1190 CZK per bed. The building has been a cultural monument since 1993 and was last renovated in 2015.Hotel patřil údajně v historii k nejznámějším a nejvýznamnějším budovám v Plzni. Byl založen roku 1895, původně se jmenoval Menčík, později Pilsner Hof. Na konci 20. let byl (už pod jménem Continental) zrekonstruován novým majitelem Václavem Ledeckým. Za 2. světové války byl díky své exkluzivitě navštěvován příslušníky gestapa. Při bombardování Škodových závodů americkými letadly na konci roku 1944 zemřelo v Plzni asi 70 lidí, přitom velká část z nich právě v Continentalu, do jehož prostor bomba spadla a vybuchla. Po osvobození se stal zrekonstruovaný hotel hlavním sídlem velitelů americké armády. Po nástupu komunismu, v roce 1952, byl hotel znárodněn a do rukou původní majitelky se navrátil po revoluci. Jeho 48 pokojů nabízí ubytování s přibližnou cenou 1000 – 1190 Kč za lůžko. Budova je od roku 1993 kulturní památkou a naposledy v roce 2015 prošla rekonstrukcí.

It's an old hotel which hasn't really been updated in a long time. The rooms are small and not updated, either. The floors in the rooms are very creaky and loud and there is a smell in my bathroom which is very unpleasant - some sort of sewer issue, I think. There is no air conditioning so it is quite warm in the rooms if you're staying in the summer.The breakfast is simple, but good. Eggs, bacon and sausage with some fruit and bread, coffee, juice, tea, yogurt, and perhaps a pastry.Overall I can't complain too much for the price (except the sewer small in the bathroom - terrible), but if you're looking for luxury, this is not it.Update: the sewer smell seems to only be on the top floor; my coworker didn't have the issue in his 1st floor room.

OK, it's a three Star hotel but from me there will be four.Central location, old hotel where you feel the good and bad of the 'Fin de Siecle'. Room was somewhat nice but not really comfy. To reach the 3rd floor from ground floor level is without an elevator a task like climbing a mountain for me. And for whatever reason they stop the elevator from running after 10pm. Whereas, the hotel is not really easy for mobility impaired people, Steps to the reception, steps to the breakfast area.Now breakfast: Imressive room, nice variety of food to choose from (a big plus from me for the creamy scrambled eggs), but only until 10am.Staff I met was friendly.

I love the style of the hotel, especially the Cafe is gorgeous. The location is great and provides parking for a reasonable price. However, the receptionist was rather unwelcoming, borderline rude.The room was ok, but I had a really strange feeling about the carpets. They felt strange, maybe damp I don't know. Wouldn't walk on the bare foot. Double bed was OK, but had 2 mattresses and a wooden support between them, more like two single beds. Really nice retro sofa. Breakfast was good.If you really like retro style and don't mind the price, might be a good choice for you.

Incredible beautiful historic place. Perfect location in the city centre, private car park. Cheap rooms with full confort, great bathroom, very clean and quiet. Huge breakfast. Attentive hotel staff. Definitively the place to stay in Plzeň. I will come back!

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel a lot. It has a bit of an old school vibe but in such a building I find this not to be a problem. The breakfast was very nice and the staff very friendly in all cases. The room size and the equipment is is sufficient. We very much enjoyed the renovated bathroom which unlike the rest of the hotel looks very modern and was equipped with a large bathtub.

Great hotel with an old world feel. Our second time staying here.Only problem is the WiFi in the rooms. The walls are so thick the WiFi signal is terrible in the rooms/suites we have had.The last suite was the Marlene Dietrich suite. Super room but no WiFi.

Tried to stay here one weekday night with an early wake up and it was a disaster. The room next to us was up partying extremely loud - reception closes at 10pm so no one was able to assist us in helping with the noise complaints. We called the after hours number given (which cost additional international $$ for our phone plan) and no one picked up until the third try. The lady at the other end was half asleep and asked “did you try reception”… to which I reminded her it closed at 10pm and this was the number they gave us. My husband ended up having to get dressed and go knock on the door himself at 1020pm and ask them to be quiet. Absolutely unacceptable as a paying guest we had to deal with this with no hotel assistance.

We stayed for a night in February with two rooms and a large group booking. Positives: great location. Historic building full of character. Nice breakfast. Easy parking if not full already. Negatives: lower floor rooms and hallways smelled really bad. Construction work starting very early on first floor was not cool. The floorboards are very squeaky in the rooms. And the floor in the rooms were also not flat…very uneven. Finally, the staff were available but not very friendly. Everyone seemed miserable. Overall we enjoyed our stay but it needs a lot of improvement.
