Beautiful monument right next to the spectacular church.

The Baroque plague column at Malostranské square was built with gratitude after the plague epidemic ended in 1713 and it was completed in 1715. The architectural design comes from the master Giovanni Battista Alliprandi, the sculptural decoration was made by Jan Oldřich Mayer and Ferdinand Geiger. The column in the upper part of Lesser Town Square was erected by the burghers in 1715 as an expression of thanks for the disappearance of the terrible plague that almost killed all inhabitants of Prague two years earlier. A twenty-foot-high column is formed by a sandstone. The designer was G. B. Alliprandi, the column was created by the stonemason F. W. Herstorf, the sculptures werwn made by J. O. Mayer and F. Geiger. After the famine in 1772, the new figures were added by the works of I. F. Platzer. Virgin Mary standing on the serpent is depicted above the altar table, below it you can see the statues of Czech patrons (St. Wenceslas, St. Ludmila, St. Prokop, St. John of Nepomuk and St. Adalbert). Above it you can see the statues of the Holy Trinity.Vrcholně barokní morový sloup na Malostranském náměstí byl vybudován z vděčnosti po skončení morové epidemie v roce 1713, dokončen byl v roce 1715. Architektonický návrh pochází od Giovanniho Battisty Alliprandiho, sochařskou výzdobu provedli Jan Oldřich Mayer a Ferdinand Geiger. Sloup v horní části Malostranského náměstí nechali v roce 1715 vztyčit měšťané jako výraz díků za odeznění strašlivé morové rány, která v Praze vypukla o dva roky dříve. Dvacet metrů vysoký sloup tvoří pískovcový jehlan vykládaný mramorem, na jehož vrcholu je umístěn symbol božího oka.Autorem návrhu byl G. B. Alliprandi, sloup vytvořil kameník F. W. Herstorf, plastiky jsou dílem J. O. Mayera a F. Geigera. Po hladomoru v roce 1772 byly doplněny postavy andílků s kartušemi a vázami z dílny I. F. Platzera. Nad oltářním stolem stojí na hadu Panna Marie, níže jsou sochy českých patronů (sv. Václava, sv. Ludmily, sv. Prokopa, sv. Jana Nepomuckého a sv. Vojtěcha). Nad patrony jsou sochy Nejsvětější Trojice: Ježíše Krista, Boha-Otce a Ducha svatého v podobě holubice.

The column is in the vicinity of St. Nicholas Church, down the road from Charles Bridge. We happened to pass by it and I thought it looked interesting. It was in the middle of the road on an island, just to the side of the church.

The Holy Trinity Column is a column that celebrates the Christian Holy Trinity, a very popular subject in Czech Republic and Slovakia. Every town or city seems to have one and Prague is no exception. The depiction of the Trinity is fairly standard, but the column is also embellished with a great many sculptures of saints below the Trinity. The column also features fountains around each of the four sides of the base.The design of the column is different from most columns of this type and it’s worth a look if in the Mala Strana district below Prague castle. The column is also just in front of the St Nicholas Church, which is itself a great Baroque Church. Worth a look.
